Sapiens by Yuval Harari is an excellent book on human evolution. It’s a book on Human history and its journey getting shaped by three major revolutions: The Cognitive Revolution (70,000 years ago), the Agricultural Revolution (10,000 years ago), and the Scientific Revolution (500 years ago).
These revolutions have empowered humans to do something no other form of life has done, which is to create and connect around ideas that do not physically exist (think religion, capitalism, and politics). These shared “myths” have enabled humans to take over the globe and have put humankind on the verge of overcoming the forces of natural selection.
Humans today have formed societies and hierarchies, social exposure led to complex relations, employer and employee relations have also experienced complexities. Today’s corporate world and HR function are facing different situations and conditions to handle human resources. Employees are ambitious, have access to information, believe in taxi cab relation, need facilities, innovative and fresh working culture, etc. etc. Employers and employees are at an intersection where they are criss crossing on aspirations, environment, culture.
In this stage of evolution, typically young employees and new entrants to the corporate world are struggling. Well, this was always the case and what’s new this time is an obvious question. Today, whenskilling is a major gap and organizations struggle to find the talent and attritionrate, is many times higher than a decade ago, then to reflect on employee expectations become focal. Today HR is no more a cost center they are participating more in business discussions, one of the major KRA for HR is to create a pipeline for future growth. Hence I argue that hiring methodologies are also needed to be relooked.
The global economy has also seen some glaring trends, Brexit, US elections, China policy, Middle East struggle, and worldwide agitation between countries and its citizens are a reflection of different expectations. The corporate world and its challenges to scale and sustainable growth are under stress. I will submit that our choices reflect who we are, hence our sensitivity to these changes and responsiveness will set us for a new trajectory.
